GNC $50 Gift Certificate Giveaway!

I never used to really care about vitamins, protein supplements, fitness or eating well, but since I've had life altering weight loss surgery... they are at the top of my list of priorities. You don't have to have surgery for these things to be important... we should all take care of our health. GNC is a store known for their health and wellness products, and their moto is "Live Well"!

The last little while I've been having trouble getting enough protein after my gastric bypass surgery. I'm supposed to be getting a minimum of 60grams of protein a day, but I'm not getting nearly enough. With it being 6 months since surgery, my hair has started thinning out and my nails won't seem to grow. I know this is due to the malabsorption caused by the surgery, and I have a hard time stomaching any protein shakes.

Shopbop, 3.1 Phillip Lim bags and Designer Woman's Fashion: $100 Gift Card Giveaway!

Since I've lost quite a bit of weight, I've recently been more interested in fashion. It's nice being able to purchase clothing at a store or online, without having to buy plus sizes. I recently came across an awesome website called Shopbop.com. It's a site that carries designer woman's fashion brands, and a wide variety of fashion products. Shopbop caries clothing, handbags (Foley & Corinna bags, 3.1 Phillip Lim bags, etc.), shoes, accessories (MM6 Maison Martin Margiela) and much more. I really like how easy the site is to navigate and how you can even make your own personal loves from the site... links, loves, wish list, cart, etc. You're able to shop by designers, type of product and by outfit.

Don't forget to swing by and check out their sale section. I spent a good hour or so looking through everything Shopbop has to offer. I already created a list of items that I would love to have, and can't wait to start building a wardrobe of clothes and accessories.

Mid Week Medical Update

Once again I haven't been blogging like usual. I felt good on Tuesday and went to group therapy, but had a major mood crash after. Why? I have no idea... just feeling down and sleepy. I'm completyly off the Cymbalta which is good, and will probably need an increase of the Prozac. I see my therapist again on Tuesday... hopefully I will feel better by then.

Group therapy went really well, and had an excellent session Tuesday. I really like my group, as it's mostly woman of my age. All the other times I was in group therapy, it was older people who I couldn't relate to... other then them having a mental illness. I feel like there's finally hope, and I'm really trying. I think what is holding me back from feeling good, is the financial situation. Once I get coverage via disability through insurance, that will take a load off my shoulders.

I have a lot of product reviews and giveaways to work on today, and will get them listed. I will eventually get it all published... please be patient.

Breast self-exam guide

The best way to examine your breasts and what to look for.

How faithfully do you do your monthly breast self-exams? If you're like most women, breast examination is a sporadic ritual, if ever done.
Let's face it, palpating and examining the breasts is a cumbersome, time-consuming chore – much like flossing our teeth. While our intentions are honest and good for both these essential rituals, it's just so easy to forget them. Oddly enough, the regular practice of both these chores – er, habits – will yield a lifetime of health and body awareness.

Brilliant red and filled with the spices of the country it represents, this soup is a definite crowd-pleaser - perfect for this big-batch recipe. Of course, you can always just halve the ingredients if you want to make less.

Ingredients

2 tbsp (25 mL) extra-virgin olive oil
2 onions, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 celery stalks, chopped
1-1/2 tsp (7 mL) salt
1 tsp (5 mL) pepper
1 tsp (5 mL) turmeric
1 tsp (5 mL) ground cumin
1 tsp (5 mL) cinnamon
1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground ginger
1 Pinch saffron, (optional)
6 cups (1.5 L) water
1 cup (250 mL) red lentils
1 tbsp (15 mL) tomato paste
2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 can (19 oz/540 mL) tomatoes
1 cup (250 mL) frozen peas
1/4 cup (50 mL) light sour cream
2 tbsp (25 mL) minced fresh parsley
Preparation:

In large heavy saucepan or Dutch oven, heat oil over medium heat; cook onions, garlic and celery, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add salt, pepper, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, and saffron (if using); cook, stirring often, for 2 minutes.

Add water, lentils, tomato paste, potatoes and tomatoes, breaking up tomatoes with spoon; bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 35 minutes.

Add peas; simmer until lentils, vegetables and potatoes are tender, about 10 minutes. (Make-ahead: Let cool for 30 minutes; refrigerate, uncovered, in shallow airtight container until cold. Cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat to serve.) Ladle into bowls. Dollop each with sour cream; sprinkle with parsley.

Additional Information:

Tip: For a smoother texture, purée 2 cups (500 mL) of the cooked soup until smooth, then stir back into remainder of soup.

Building A Healthy Relationship

Many people consider counseling to be something that is only necessary when a relationship is at the breaking point but in reality, it can really go a long way in helping you to build a successful relationship at whatever phase you happen to find yourself in.  What are some of the things that you can expect when taking part in these types of services?

One of the first things that you will learn is that counseling is not a sign of an unhealthy relationship, but it is a sign that you are willing to work on the relationship. By establishing some of the key features of a healthy relationship and incorporating them into your lifestyle, you can really enjoy a relationship that is more fulfilling for both of you. What are some of those principles that exist in a healthy relationship?

If a woman has two wombs, can she get pregnant in both?

Uterus didelphys -- or a double womb -- is a pretty rare condition. It affects anywhere from about one in 1,000 to one in 1 million women worldwide, and it sometimes occurs in families. In some cases of double wombs, those two wombs share a set of Fallopian tubes, ovaries, a cervix and a vagina; other times, a girl is born with two of everything -- two wombs, two sets of Fallopian tombs and ovaries, two cervixes and two vaginas. A woman can have a surgical procedure to join her two vaginas into one, but the wombs are typically left separate. The condition usually occurs when the Mullers ducts of a developing fetus never fuse into one uterus, as they're supposed to.

I recently just found out that I have a "uterus didelphys"... so I thought I'd share some information regarding the condition.

Tuesday Medical Update

I just got home from my long day of doctor appointments, and I have to say I'm exhausted. It started out at meeting my counselor at 9:30am to sign some documents, and then introduced to group therapy at 10am. I had an appointment with my psychiatrist at 10:30am, and she was happy to find out that I was finally off the Cymbalta. After that I headed up to my family doctor, and was there for over an hour.

Today is a good day... and I'm feeling like there's a glimmer of hope. I actually wore heels today, and it felt great. Okay maybe not great for my feet, but great that I'm trying to cheer myself up. I will be meeting for group therapy every Tuesday and Friday's each week. I have a headache and will go rest... I will post more later today.

Acne and diet

There is no sufficient data that supports a direct relation between acne and food. Often people tend to avoid necessary food worrying that it can induce acne. Before considering going on a complete unhealthy diet it is important to evaluate the skin condition and carry out a carefully planned diet that does not exclude certain food items altogether that are believed to exacerbate skin problems. Acne is a skin condition that is classified into three main categories including acne pustules, papules and acne cysts. The condition is caused when the sebaceous glands excrete excessive amounts of oil that blocks the pores of the skin and leave room for bacteria to be produced within the clogged pores. This leads to the eventual acne formation. Even though one can resort to treatment through systematic drugs and medication, the effectiveness of each treatment varies greatly based on the type and severity of the condition itself. For mild acne benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are generally prescribed that can work well however there is no guarantee that the acne condition wont reappear. In such cases it becomes essential to start from scratch and start working towards improving on health and hygiene. Taking constant care for the skin is a crucial factor to improving acne.

Monday Medical Update

I haven't been blogging as usual, as I'm not feeling the greatest. I'm still going through Cymbalta withdrawal, but no where near as bad as in the beginning. I still feel like I'm going to have a panic attack, and have a daily headache. I'm tired, eyes burning, jaw hurts... I think I've been grinding my teeth. I've been having crazy dreams and nightmares that seem so incredibly real. I also noticed since I've gone off the medication, that my blood pressure has been higher then usual. Guess maybe it's the stress on my body that's causing the increased blood pressure.

End of Week Medical Update

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been blogging like usual. I still haven't been feeling well this last week, and have been spending most of my time in bed. I'm doing okay, but it will probably take a few more days before I feel better. The withdrawal has been incredible, and a total nightmare. At least I haven't been going through it completely alone... my fiance has been staying here half of the week. I also start group therapy as of Tuesday next week, and will be going twice a week (Tues. and Fri.).

I know I'm a little behind on reviews, but I haven't forgotten them. I have some awesome giveaways that will be starting shortly as well! Once I start feeling like myself, you'll notice an increase in posts. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and thank you to everyone who wished me well.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Facts to Know

1. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disturbance in women of reproductive age, affecting an estimated 5 to 10 percent of all women.

2. During the normal ovulatory process, an egg is matured in an ovarian follicle, which then ruptures and releases the egg. In women with PCOS, high levels of hormones called androgens halt the egg's development, leaving an enlarged follicle containing the immature egg. These follicles — whose appearance is sometimes likened to a string of pearls — are the cysts observed via ultrasound in PCOS. The name is a bit misleading — not every woman with PCOS has cysts, and many women who have cysts don't have PCOS.

Diagnosing Eating Disorders

Because consequences of eating disorders can be severe, early diagnosis is crucial. Between one and two of every 10 cases of anorexia leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, medical complications or suicide. Eating disorders in general can disrupt physical and emotional growth in teenagers and can lead to premature osteoporosis, a condition where bones are weakened and more susceptible to fracture; increase infertility; and raise the risk of miscarriages or low-birth-weight babies. Anorexia may be especially deadly for women with insulin dependent diabetes if they omit or under-use insulin to control their weight. Insulin therapy can, sometimes, cause weight gain but changing insulin dosages to lose weight can be very dangerous and life-threatening.

Medical Update: Woken up From my Sleep

I'm not feeling good at all. I just woke up from my sleep, and I can't stop shaking. It's a weird feeling that's hard to explain. I checked my blood sugar and it's normal, as it almost felt like the shaking when you're sugar is dropping too low. Talk about crazy withdrawal symptoms from Cymbalta. I've come off of other medications in the past, but wow, nothing as crazy as this happened before. I pray that I can get relaxed, and be able to fall back asleep. I will update you all later on how I'm feeling. Have a good night and sweet dreams.
