HOW NOT TO LOOK SICK (YES, EVEN WHEN YOU ARE SNIFFLING AWAY)

Red, watery eyes, runny nose, blotchy skin and chapped lips… having a cold or the flu isn’t very nice. It’s not just that you feel awful but you don’t look too pretty either. But there’s no need to let a nasty chill wreak havoc with your looks (or your plans). Master these easy beauty tricks and face the world looking terrific, despite the sniffles.

Hide a cold #1: Glow of health
If the winter chills have left your complexion looking tired and pasty, use a gentle cleansing scrub to rev up circulation and make skin glow. Follow with a hydrating, vitamin-rich moisturiser, like Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Concentrate, to soothe soreness around the nose.

Pale, sick faces sometimes need a bit of artificial health pumped into them – a sweep of blush will make you look sprightly and healthy.

Hide a cold #2: Get rid of the red
Red and blotchy skin is a sure sign of an unhappy immune system. Use products that counter the redness, like Smashbox’s Photo Finish Color Correcting Foundation Primer, then damp-sponge on a sheer liquid foundation to even out the skin tone.

My Baby Has the Flu #fluseason #childrensflu #sicktoddler #tiredmomma

Brianna, © 2016 aspicyboycatandmyfatass.com

Last week I had the flu, then my mother, and now my daughter. I feel terrible seeing her suffer with the flu for the first time, but I guess we've been lucky so far with her not getting sick much. So, what causes the flu? The culprit is the wonderful influenza visus, and there's plenty of strains circulating out there. You or your child can catch the flu by coming into contact with an infected person, especially if that person coughs or sneezes around her, or by touching something that an infected person has touched. If your little one comes down with the flu, the symptoms usually last about a week, but sometimes it can linger for up to two weeks. Don't confuse influenza with the stomach flu (aka gastroenteritis). That’s caused by a variety of viruses (but not the influenza virus) and leads to diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes with fever.

I'm Sick, Yet Again! #fluseason

It's the final day of the year, and I'm sick once again. I guess I was lucky not getting sick over the Christmas holidays, but the lack of sleep sure caught up on me. Since I don't get paid when I'm sick, I'm working... and with it  being new years eve, the transportation business is fairly busy... which means I'm working!

How am I managing not dying at my desk?! Plenty of tea with lemon and honey, a box of tissues with lotion, extra strength cold & flu medicine, cough drops, and a good sense of humour since I sound like  Elmer Fudd.

Beauty Products To Use When You Have The Common Cold

The common cold already struck my household, and it will likely move on to yours before the year is out. Sadly, having the sniffles doesn’t always get you a day off work, so that means you have to go about daily life without looking like a monster. Learn from my beauty mishaps and learn to look good on the outside, despite how you feel on the inside.

1. Leave the bright lipstick at home.
I always think a cheery pink lip color will help make me look less sick, but when you’re wiping snot off your face with a tissue all day, you’re likely to smear that pretty pout. Instead, keep lips moisturized with a clear balm, likeEOS Organic Lip Balm Smooth Sphere ($3.29, evolutionofsmooth.com). It will keep lips hydrated and can be reapplied all day long without a mirror.

5 WAYS TO CARE FOR YOUR SKIN WHEN YOU ARE SICK

Just recovering from the flu (why can’t Mother Nature make up her mind and stop swinging between balmy spring breezes and freezing snowstorms please?) and my skin is paying the price. All of a sudden, it’s broken out into super-deep acne cysts, extreme dullness and flaky patches, which are getting far tougher to cure than the fever and cold themselves! My dermatologist tells me that I should have looked after my skin while I was sick in order to stave off the spotty, flushed, dehydrated side effects right at the beginning. Thankfully, her preventive measures are super-simple, ‘coz much as I love my beauty stuff, doing anything more complicated than blowing my nose was rather impossible between medications, itchy throats and fevers.

TURN TO MINT
There is nothing like an infection to make the skin look dull and completely lacklustre. Plus, the congestion is a terrific breeding ground for zit-causing bacteria. So, think mint. Copious amounts of mint, in every form possible. Tea, face pack, face wash, moisturiser… not only will natural mint-infused oils and creams open up a stuffy nose, they also help the skin breathe and detoxify. Aveda has some terrific options that will soothe both body and mind.

USE A HUMIDIFIER
I know, I know… this can be a pain but remember that decongestants dehydrate the skin, leaving it dry and flaky. Using a humidifier – especially at night – keeps moisture in the air, which maintains hydration levels in the skin and keeps it feeling supple (and comfortable!).

APPLY A COLD GEL MASK
Pop a cold gel mask in the fridge – it’s a terrific way of replacing the skin’s moisture and decongesting the face (while alleviating a pounding head for bonus brownie points). Jurlique’s Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Gel Mask makes for a terrific option.

KEEP YOUR NOSE MOISTURISED
Blowing your nose repeatedly? Stay prepared for red, dry and irritated skin around your nostrils, even with moisturised tissues. Unless (and I learnt this too late) you dab on a bit of cream on your nose after every blow. Creams that contain lipid-rich oils and ceramides are the best bet, like Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer.

DRINK LOTS OF WATER
And by “water”, I refer to the multitude of hydrating liquids out there – including green tea, iced tea, fresh juice etc etc etc. These will flush away the toxins, flush out the germs and stop your body (and hence skin) from overheating. For an added cold-busting kick, opt for drinks infused with fresh ginger and honey.

8 Differences between common cold and flu symptoms.

In most cases, stuffy noses and sore throats can mean you either have the flu or a cold. Learn how to tell the difference with these eight common symptoms, and discover foods to help beat both.

They're back! Those unwelcome visitors commonly known as sore throat and stuffy nose have taken up residence in your head. If the symptoms gave some advanced notice of their arrival, you may just have a cold. But if they showed up suddenly, well, that may be the flu. Colds and the flu have a lot of the same symptoms. We look at the frequency and severity of eight of them to help you deduce which one you have.

1. Fever
Cold: Occasional; mild
Flu: Common; often above 38°C for up to four days

2. Headache
Cold: Occasional
Flu: Common; often severe

3. Stuffy nose
Cold: Common
Flu: Occasional

4. Chills
Cold: Rare
Flu: Common

5. Sore throat
Cold: Common; mild and intermittent
Flu: Occasional

6. Chest discomfort
Cold: Common; mild to moderate, with hacking cough
Flu: Common; can become severe (including coughing)

7. Fatigue and weakness
Cold: Occasional; mild
Flu: Usual; can last two to three weeks

8. Aches and pains
Cold: Occasional; mild
Flu: Common; often severe

Foods to help beat the flu
Stuck in bed with the flu? Try eating your way back to health. Desiree Nielsen, a registered dietitian in Vancouver, offers some suggestions that will have you on your feet again in no time.

Breakfast
Probiotic yogurt helps your body in two ways: The protein supports your immune system and the probiotic bacteria wards off disease-causing bacteria.

Morning snack
Boil water with two or three sliced lemons and an inch of sliced peeled ginger for 10 minutes. Strain and serve with raw honey (a natural antibiotic and antifungal food) to soothe your sore throat.

Lunch
Add oysters to your plate. They're loaded with zinc, which aids your immune system and helps create antibodies to fight infection.

Afternoon snack
Nibble on crystallized or pickled ginger. A natural stomach settler, this snack will help ease nausea.

Dinner
Saute some cremini mushrooms, an overlooked powerhouse when it comes to fighting colds. The polysaccharide compounds in mushrooms help activate your immune system. And they're one of the few foods containing vitamin D1, which the body converts to vitamin D3, a known immune-system booster.

Medical Update

One thing that I've noticed over the past year or so since having gastric bypass surgery, I've gotten sick more frequently. My immune system isn't as strong as it should be, and I can't tell you how many times I've come down with a cold. I feel like I'm always writing giving medical updates on here... whether it's for a cold, anxiety/panic attack, depression, PCOS, or something else that's going on. I don't regret one minute of having the surgery, and would elect to have it over and over again. When they say make sure to take your vitamins for life... they truly meant it.

I'm feeling better then I was, and still going to take it easy for the next couple of days. It's that time of year when the air is getting colder, and everyone seems to be getting sick. Oh well, another day of resting.

Medical Update

Since I woke up early today in terrible pain... my neck, throat, ears, etc... I decided to head over to the clinic by my place. Since yesterday evening, the pain has gotten a lot worse. After waiting for an hour for the clinic to open, I ended up waiting almost another hour until I saw someone. Turns out that I have an advanced case of strep throat... yuck! I assumed it was strep throat, since I've had it in the past... it felt just like it. What is strep throat... click here to read a previous post about it.. So for the next week or so I'm stuck taking antibiotics, and lots of bed rest.

What is strep throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection in the throat and the tonsils. The throat gets irritated and inflamed, causing a sudden, severe sore throat.

What causes strep throat?

Strep throat is caused by streptococcal (strep) bacteria. There are many different types of strep bacteria. Some cause more serious illness than others.

Although some people are quick to think that any painful sore throat is strep, sore throats are usually caused by a viral infection and not strep bacteria. A sore throat caused by a virus can be just as painful as strep throat. But if you have cold symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, or a runny or stuffy nose, you probably do not have strep throat.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of strep throat are:

  • A sudden, severe sore throat.
  • Pain when you swallow.
  • Fever over 101°F (38.3°C).
  • Swollen tonsils and lymph nodes.
  • White or yellow spots on the back of a bright red throat.
  • You may also have a headache and belly pain.
  • Less common symptoms are a red skin rash, vomiting, not feeling hungry, and body aches.

Strep throat can be passed from person to person. When a person who has strep throat breathes, coughs, or sneezes, tiny droplets with the strep bacteria go into the air. These droplets can be breathed in by other people. If you come into contact with strep, it will take 2 to 5 days before you start to have symptoms.

How is strep throat diagnosed?

Your doctor will do a physical exam, ask you about your symptoms and past health, and do a rapid strep test to diagnose strep throat. Sometimes another test, called a throat culture, is also needed.

If the rapid strep test says that you don't have strep (the test is negative) but your symptoms suggest that you do, your doctor may want to do a throat culture to be sure. This is because rapid strep tests are not always accurate. To do a throat culture, the doctor will swab a sample of cells from the back of your throat. The sample will go into a special cup (culture) where the strep bacteria can grow over time. If strep bacteria grow, the doctor knows that you have strep.

If the rapid strep test is positive and says that you do have strep, there’s no need to do the throat culture.

How is it treated?

Strep throat will go away in 3 to 7 days with or without treatment. Doctors usually treat strep throat with antibiotics even though they may not make you well faster. Antibiotics shorten the time you are able to spread the disease to others (are contagious) and lower the risk of spreading the infection to other parts of your body.

You are contagious while you still have symptoms. Most people stop being contagious 24 hours after they start antibiotics. If you don't take antibiotics, you may be contagious for 2 to 3 weeks, even if your symptoms go away.

Your doctor may also advise you to take an over-the-counter medicine like acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) to help with pain and lower your fever. Do not give aspirin to anyone younger than 20. It has been linked to Reye syndrome, a serious illness.

How do you prevent strep throat?

To avoid getting strep throat, it is a good idea to avoid contact with anyone who has a strep infection. If you are around someone who has strep, wash your hands often. Don't drink from the same glass or use the same eating utensils, and don't share toothbrushes.

Bacteria can live for a short time on doorknobs, water faucets, and other objects. It’s a good idea to wash your hands regularly.

If you have a strep infection, there are things you can do to avoid spreading it to others. Use tissues you can throw away instead of handkerchiefs, wash your hands often, and do not sneeze or cough on others. Antibiotics can shorten the time that you are contagious. It is a good idea to stay home from work or school until 24 hours after you have started antibiotics.

Where have I been hiding?

So for those of you who read my blog on a regular basis, you probably know that I usually post daily. It's been about a week since I last posted something... why? Well, once again I've been sick. Yes, I'm a sick puppy... trade one problem for another. Other then the regular anxiety and panic attacks that I was having, I now have a crazy sore throat, stiff neck, swollen glands, ear pain, and who knows what else will pop up! The most annoying part right now, is when I swallow, my ears pop and have a sharp pain inside. My throat almost looks like I could have strep throat, but who knows. I always seem to overlook and overreact to things. All I know is that I have to go to the walk in clinic by my home tomorrow, cause I need something to help ease the pain. If it is strep... gotta have meds. I'll keep you all updated.

For the companies that I have product reviews to do... I haven't forgotten about you. They will be published as soon as I'm able to sit at the computer comfortably.

Medical Update

I figured I might as well update you all on some results that I got back. I've done quite a bit of calling around, and the awesome receptionist at my surgeons office deserves an award for the amount of work she did for me. So far the blood results from the other day came back all normal, as well did the urine sample. Two of the fecal samples came back negative for stuff like e coli, salmonella, etc. I'm still waiting on one further fecal test, which had to be sent out... that's to test for parasites. Until I find out the results for that, it's hard to say what the course of action will be. Hopefully my illness will just get better on it's own, that it's just a parasite related virus. It always seems that I trade one problem for another. Only positive thing about this whole mess... I've lost 13Lbs so far.

Medical Update

Just a little update to let you all know how I'm feeling. Well, I feel like shit! A week of constantly running to the washroom, with diarrhea that was like turning on a tap. Nothing that I ate seemed to stay with me, and it sure played a number on my system. Finally after a week, last night I went to the emergency room at the hospital where I had my gastric bypass surgery, as well as the gallbladder surgery.

They did blood work, urine and stool tests... my blood work came back fine. Unfortunately for the other tests, I have to wait a few days for those results. The doctor said most likely it's a virus, that needs to run it's course... grrr... I feel like crap and that's all he has to say! At least while I was there I had an IV and went through two bags of electrolyte stuff... that should help with my dehydration. For now, gotta rest and drink Gatorade to keep my body from losing too much electrolytes. After I got home, once again I was stuck in the washroom... not fun. I did't get to sleep much last night, and my stomach is burning. Hopefully this will start to get better soon. Only pro about this whole situation... I've dropped 11Lbs!
