Best Ways to Beat the Heat - vacation edition

With record-breaking heat, people the world over had to get creative with ways to stay cool. In Paris, France, they frolicked in public fountains during the heatwave. Luckily for those in the United States, most homes and businesses are air-conditioned, particularly in the south. Wear Loose Clothing

Wearing loose clothing that allows air to circulate is a great way to stay cool in the heat. Cotton is ideal for summer clothes as it is comfortable, absorbs sweat and dries quickly. If you work in offices that are cool, layer so that you can take something off when you have to go back outside. Keep to light colors, as well, as they reflect heat.

Keep Hydrated

Don't forget to drink lots of water. Sweat is your body's natural air conditioner, and if you let yourself get dehydrated, you stop sweating. Stay away from alcohol and caffeine, as they can be dehydrating. Try eating more water-containing foods like watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe and strawberries.

Put Lotions in the Refrigerator

A cool trick for hot days is to put your moisturizers and serums in the refrigerator. It will cool your skin on contact and will continue the temperature lowering effects as fans and air conditioning blow over you.

Use Ice Packs

If you have to be outside, try packing a cooler with ice packs. Take them out periodically and put on pulse points and behind your neck for a few minutes at a time. For people that have suffered heat exhaustion, it is recommended that ice packs be put on wrists, neck, elbows, groin, and ankles and behind your knees to cool your core temperature down quickly and safely.

Take a Dip in the Pool

When all else fails, go to the pool. Nothing feels better under a hot sun than a plunge in a cold pool. Take it as an opportunity to get some exercise without sweating by doing laps.

Shower in Cooler Water

When the temperatures are high, don't add to the discomfort with a hot shower. Turn the cold water up and spend a few minutes cooling down. It will help you rest better at night, and it will give your day a temperature-lowering start before you head out into the heat.
