Do some stretching
Sometimes we get so caught up in our thoughts throughout the day, that we forget everything else. Take a moment and focus on your body, such as doing some stretching or even visiting the gym. It's the perfect opportunity to free your mind. Take your time, and focus on how your body feels. Exercise increases your overall health and well-being, which in return will make you happier. It's a direct stress-buster, as it pumps up your endorphins.
Have a snack
Yep... I'm telling you to eat! The best place to start is by focusing on what you're eating, rather than on your thoughts... means stay away from the TV. Take your time and pay attention to every mouthful. Savor the delicious taste as you chew the food, and focus on the textures and aroma. (Turn off TV and stay off the phone for this)
Make some tea
Nothing makes me smile as much as having a tea party with my daughter. Brewing a real cup of tea is a great way of getting in touch with your senses. Hold the cup and feel the warmth between your fingers. Enjoy taking a moment out of your day and relax with a cup of tea. It's a great time to test out different flavors. Green tea or chamomile tea is my favorite after a long day.
Wash the dishes
I actually meant it. When you wash the dishes after dinner, you usually thing about everything you still have to do before you can relax. Instead, try focusing on actually washing the dishes. Start by enjoying hearing the sink fill up with water. Feel the warm water on your hands and fingers, and take in the aroma of the dish detergent. What do you see, hear, smell, feel?
Give yourself a manicure
After you've washed the dishes... why not sit back and start on giving yourself a manicure or pedicure. Or even both for that matter. Since your hands might be rough from the dish washing, it's the perfect time for some TLC. I love giving myself one in the evening after dinner, and lathering on my favorite hand cream.
Be creative
Grab your favorite colouring book and colour a picture. There's plenty of adult colouring books on the market at the moment, and most are reasonably priced. When I get the chance, I love to colour... especially with my daughter next to me.
If you have any further suggestions when it comes to mindfulness exercises, feel free to share your ideas.
