How to Sleep Better Without Costly Medications
Sleep medications promise an easy solution for insomnia, but many of these products may do more harm than good. The Washington Post reports that little evidence exists to back up claims that over-the-counter drugs can help people sleep. If you're having trouble getting a good night's rest, you may want to avoid the cost and potential side effects of these medications by tackling the source of the problem first.
Many bedrooms are too bright to promote normal sleep. Fluorescent and LED lights have the most disruptive effects, according to Harvard University. One way to minimize indoor lighting is to put removable stickers over LED status indicators on electronics. Also, switch off power strips or put dark-colored bulbs in your night lights.
Outdoor light may disrupt your sleep if you work at night or live near street lights. For maximum darkness, consider installing black out blinds on your windows. Another option is to find a comfortable sleeping mask. Remember that your body needs to know the difference between day and night.
Noise is another problem that causes sleeping difficulties. To block out a snoring partner or loud neighbors, try wearing a set of earplugs. The white noise from a small fan might also help you sleep, and there's also the White Noise app available for smartphones. Focus on maintaining a consistent noise level; a dripping faucet or a TV will keep you awake longer than a humming refrigerator.
Temperature affects your body's ability to get adequate sleep. Doctors generally recommend heating or cooling a bedroom to about 65 degrees F to 72 degrees F, according to WebMD. The optimal temperature is different for every individual, and depending upon the time of year, you may find that wearing socks or sleeping without a shirt enhances your slumber.
Exercise can increase your body temperature for several hours. This has the same harmful effect as an overheated bedroom. According to the National Sleep Foundation, you can fall asleep sooner when you exercise in the afternoon instead of the evening. The ideal time for physical activity is about six hours before you go to bed.
Your diet strongly influences nightly sleeping patterns. A study conducted by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine found that people who eat a wide range of foods tend to sleep normally. They generally consume more selenium, lycopene, vitamin C, and water on a daily basis.
Caffeine is another important dietary factor. The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine indicates that a caffeinated beverage will disturb your sleep if you drink it six hours before going to bed. Remember that caffeine isn't restricted to coffee and soda. Smaller amounts of the substance can be found in candy bars, hot chocolate and black tea.
Finally, don't neglect to consider your state of mind. Strong emotions, anxiety and depression often limit sleep, according to the Franklin Institute. It's vital to relax before sleeping and avoid activities that promote distressing thoughts. Don't watch the 11 o'clock news, engage in stressful activities or pay your bills near bedtime.

Delve into the Deliciousness of Sweet Treats
Finally the words that every woman wants to hear… loving chocolate is genetic! There is nothing we can do to stop it, if we have that special sweet gene then we must give in to it. Gone are the days when others can blame women reaching for chocolate on hormones, instead everyone needs to appreciate that it is in our genetic make up and we are in fact a slave to our sweet loving DNA.
So when we are indulging in chocolate fudge or spoiling ourselves with Haribo, no one can say a word, nor do we have to feel guilty about it. Obviously, our genetic make up doesn't mean we are less likely to put on weight as a result of eating a lot of sugar, so we do need to be careful not to take this recent discovery to the extreme.
So what are the sweet facts of the research?
A group of scientists got together to look into the idea of people having a sweet tooth. It is a long standing saying used to describe people who have a passion for anything sugary and sweet as opposed to those who like savory foods.
The scientists looked into the genetic make up of sweet people and were able to spot something that made them different to those with a savory preference. There is a very prominent gene that makes some of us lean more towards sugar and, strangely, it was only found in women.
There is a part of the brain that responds to pleasure and it is found that it is this part that encourages us to eat sweet treats.
If we have the sweet gene our pleasure part of the brain reacts really well every time we eat a piece of chocolate for example, which then encourages us to do it more. Who wants to stop doing something they enjoy? Certainly not me, which is why I have always been partial to a Mars bar.
It was also found that this gene not only encourages us to eat more sweet stuff but also indulge in fatty foods. It is undecided whether this gene is actually a good thing or not. In terms of health and fitness it could be argued that it isn't, that it is this gene that makes us indulge in a plate of chips followed by a sweet pudding. But from a female’s point of view we now have the perfect excuse to delve into the deliciousness of sweet treats, what could be better?

Fish Oil Improves Mood
There's no question that women with PCOS suffer from more mood problems such as depression and anxiety than those without the syndrome. For some women, mood issues can be a result of dealing with all the problems PCOS brings: dramatic body image issues, fluctuations in blood sugar, loss of control over weight, difficulty managing the syndrome, infertility, and lack of support. Mood problems can also be brought on by hormone imbalances. There is some good news for the millions of women who struggle with mood problems: omega-3 fatty acids, particularly the kind that come from fish, may help manage mood.
About Fish Oil
The two main types of fish oils are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). All of us need these omega-3 fats from our diets as our bodies can't make them. That's why they are referred as essential fatty acids. Fish oil is preferred to plant-based omega-3's (flaxseed, canola oil) because our bodies use them best. Women with PCOS benefit from fish oil as it has been found to be effective at improving ovulation, triglycerides, insulin resistance and inflammation. Click here to read more about fish oil's important role in PCOS.
Fish Oil's Role in Depression
The topic of omega-3 fatty acid's role in depression and mood was presented at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo last month. Here is some of the information on fish oil and depression discussed:
Geographic areas that have a higher intake of omega-3 fats have lower rates of depression.
Depressed individuals have been found to have depleted levels of DHA and EPA.
Studies using fish oil show significant improvement in depression compared to placebo.
Both the presenters and the American Psychological Association recommend those with mood disorders take 1-2 grams (1,000-2,000 milligrams) per day of EPA + DHA as an adjunct treatment, to be used along with therapy and antidepressants. Government guidelines recommend eating cold-water fish twice a week, yet that amount is insufficient to reach the therapeutic amount recommended for improving mood. That's why fish oil is preferred. Despite the data, it still isn't clear if omega-3s can be used as mood stabilizers or which type of omega-3 is most beneficial. Current studies are exploring this.
Bottom line
Fish oil offers numerous benefits to women with PCOS. Women with PCOS may find that taking sufficient amounts of EPA+DHA when combined with therapy and medications, helpful to stabilize mood and improve depression.

Cruelty of Cancer: Beyond the Sufferer
When someone is diagnosed with cancer it has a profound affect on their lives, their outlook and frame of mind. Regardless of the prognosis, having cancer is a life-altering experience. There is the constant fear that the disease will end up costing that person their life or, if they recover from it and are given the all clear, that it will come back. As it should be, the sole focus becomes the victim. Families and friends rally round in support, united in fear. Medical professionals and experts such as Brosch Direct are on hand to help the victim with the cancer battle. The world seems to stop as the diagnosis is made and the treatment takes place.
But what about the family and friends? The people who surround the sufferer often have their own battles, which they are trying to conceal. They try so hard to hide their fear, upset and concern, to focus solely on supporting the victim in the best way they can.
What friends and family have to go through was really brought to light in a Sunday supplement this weekend. The Sunday newspaper I favour, also includes a weekly magazine containing fashion, lifestyle and human-interest stories. This edition included a piece from photographer, Angelo Merendino.
A four-page spread detailed his wife Jennifer’s cancer battle and the pain he experienced watching the woman he loved slowly fade away. Jennifer experienced two battles with cancer - the second round resulted in her death. She was keen for her husband to capture each step of the treatment and how they came to terms with the illness in the hope that it would support other sufferers. The photos were also included in the article.
It became apparent when reading the piece that although Jennifer excepted the fact she was going to die, her husband never did - he was so committed to supporting her, being strong for her and putting his emotions to one side to concentrate solely on the woman he loved. The piece did not take away the plight of Jennifer’s battle or her incredible bravery but it did raise questions as to how those around victims cope.
Families have to watch someone they love slowly die or at least lose a part of themselves to an illness. They often feel helpless with the only thing they can do is hold their loved-ones hand through the worst times.
With any big life change or bereavement there are people who can offer advice and counseling services but perhaps the family and friends of cancer sufferers need more acknowledgement and understanding in the long term? Once the battle is over the thoughts lay entirely with the victim rather than how the family will cope with what they have experienced and the aftermath. Cancer is a cruel disease that changes the life of the sufferer and those who love them.

A powerful statement piece, the bracelet combines the lasting strength of stainless steel with a bold, deep red, carbon fiber inlay for a handsome fusion he'll love. The surgical grade steel won't stain or tarnish, so he'll enjoy the fire energy of the dragon for many years to come. Engravable too!

My partner isn't one who wears much jewelry, so I wanted something that was casual, unique, top quality, and could be for either daily wear or for special occasions. The pictures don't do this piece justice, as it really is a nice item for anyone's collection. It's heavy duty, has a gorgeous shine, and won't pull on your arm hair if you're a man that's hairy. This would make for the perfect gift for that special man in your life this holiday season!

Day 12: 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways - Win An OhMiBod Club Vibe 2.0H!
My husband bought me an iPod over a year ago for Christmas, and then for my birthday this year he gave me an iPhone. I've become addicted to the wonderful applications for the two Apple products, that I'm always downloading something new. A while back I received an interesting product from OhMiBod, which is a company that offer products that vibrate to the beat of your music. They also offer an application that's available for download, that works in-sync with the toy and music. The Freestyle W Vibe that I received almost a year ago, is one of the best quality vibrators that I own to date. I was excited to test out their new Club Vibe 2.0H, as I knew the previous massager was amazing.
What's the difference between the two? The first toy is a rabbit style vibe, and the new one can be used pretty much anywhere on the body, and actually can be worn inside your underwear. Sounds like fun doesn't it?!
As with the original Club Vibe, the Club Vibe 2.OH has a velvety finish and vibrates and pulses to club music, concerts or to your lover’s voice. But with Club Vibe 2.OH, the mic is built into the wireless remote control and can be kept in a clutch, in your hand or in someone else’s - adding to the extra excitement of not knowing what’s coming next. :)
The remote control has a range of 15-20 feet and 5 intensity levels for Club (ambient) mode. The remote allows you to switch the vibe from ambient to manual mode and cycle through 5 amazing patterns with a simple push of a button. Club Vibe 2.OH is one of those vibrators that you’ll want to bring with you everywhere!
This is such a cool massager/vibe, that I'm even giving one to my best friend for Christmas. Yes... this item would make for an excellent gift, or even any other of their vibes that they offer.
Interested in getting your own OhMiBod? Of course you are! Click here to visit and grab your items today! Interested in visiting their Facebook and Twitter pages? Of course you are... you never know when you could save and get a deal!

Day 12: 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways - Win A Pair of Silk Pillows From Smart Silk!
For quite some time I've had trouble sleeping. I go through phases of nearly sleepless nights. On average, I sleep 3-6 hours... which has taken a toll on me. I've tried many things to help myself sleep, and they only help me fall asleep. I have no problem falling asleep, it's staying asleep. If you're like me and have problems sleeping, then you should give Smart Silk a try. Wake up feeling glamorous with their silky smooth, satin pillowcases. They're pillowcases designed for smoother skin and healthier hair.
Studies have shows that sleeping on something silky like satin, can reduce wrinkles and help eliminate hair loss and breakage. Your face glides smoothly over the satin, keeping lines and wrinkles to a minimum, and is great for your hair. When your head moves on a cotton pillowcase, friction develops, that can damage and break hair. Because your head slides smoothly over these pillowcases, that damaging friction is eliminated and hair is healthier. The natural properties of silk combined with the unique and patented technology allows you to enjoy a better night's sleep. You would wake up much less frequently from discomfort, night sweats, temperature changes, coughing and allergies.

Does it really make a difference using Smart Silk? Hell yes! Since I've been sleeping on my new pillow, I've increased the amount of time that I actually sleep. I normally have a hard time sleeping, but using the pillow has helped improved my sleep. It hasn't completely fixed the problem of my insomnia, but instead of only two hours of sleep, I'm now getting on average about six hours. Would I recommend the company and their products? Yes!

Day 12: 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways - Win a $75 Gift Certificate For Hugrz Boot Wraps!
I'm a woman who loves her accessories. I have a nice collection of purses, jewelry, and of course shoes and boots. Jewelry and purses are fairly easy when it comes to storage, but foot-ware is a little trickier. When there's too many shoes and boots, it's hard to tell what you actually have. Half of my stuff never gets worn, because it's put away in a bin in the front closet. What if there was an easier way to have a bunch of designs in one? Well there is! Hugrz Boot Wraps came to my rescue, and now I have a whole new pair of sexy boots that don't take up any extra room. With one pair of boots, I can mix and match the boot wraps with different designs, colors, and accessories, and completely transform the look.
Hugrz carry three types of boot wraps: Aspen Collection, Bennington Collection, and the Sante Fe Collection.
The Aspen is comforting as an après ski hot chocolate, as beautiful as genuine fur, these Hugrz™ boot wraps are soft and luxurious. Wear them here, there, and everywhere... but leave your guilt at home. All material is 100% acrylic. Available in 12 sophisticated styles. I received the Grooved Black Mink for review from this collection along with some accessories to jazz it up. I must say that the pictures don't do it justice, as they really look great on. They're affordable, super trendy, and would fit most legs. I usually have quite a bit of trouble trying to find boots up to the knee, as I have wide calves. Hugrz help by not having to run around trying to fit my leg into a bunch of boots seeing if they would fit. Just need one pair of boots, and switch around with as many Boot Wraps as you like!
The Bennington Collection: From the falling leaves through to the blossoming trees, your favorite sweaters add that extra layer of style. Your boots deserve the same. Hugrz™ boot wraps add color, texture, and pattern to your favorite boots. Soft, cotton-blend yarn. Available in 6 classic styles.
Sante Fe Collection: Terra cotta days. Cool desert nights. These Hugrz™ boot wraps have a short, soft, velvet feel. Wear them to show your spots, your stripes, and your fun self! Here comes the sun. All material is 100% acrylic. Available in 3 playful styles.
