Developing your own sense of style and fashion can seem challenging. Not everyone can afford to follow the example of Mariah Carey, who makes an arm sling look fashionable states the New York Daily News, but that does not mean you cannot look your best within your budget range by focusing on the selection of quality clothing items.

Identify Your Body Type

Look your best by starting from the foundation. Identify your personal body type before you head to the store. Shopping for your body type will help you look good regardless of the colors and styles that you select because the clothing is made to enhance your best features.

Select a part of your body that you like the most and pick out clothes that enhance your best features. By focusing on the parts of your body that you like the most, it is easier to find clothing that works well with your body type. For example, follow Ginnifer Goodwin's style example by accentuating your waist.

Consider Your Age

When you want to look your best in any setting, dress in clothing that is age appropriate. A woman in her 20s can get away with more outfits than a woman in her 50s or 60s. Even if you are just lazing around the house or are having Direct TV installed at home, dressing your age can make a difference on how you feel. Play around with colors, patterns and styles if you are in your 20s, but focus on classic and timeless fashions if you are in your 40s or older, like Cindy Crawford.

Use Accessories to Draw the Eyes Where You Want Them

If you feel self-conscious about certain parts of your body, then make them less noticeable by wearing accessories that attract the eyes. Bold accessories that draw the eyes will allow you to direct attention to the best areas of your body while detracting attention from areas that make you feel self-conscious. Follow Hayden Panettiere's example with big earrings that draw the eyes to her face.

Limit accessories when you wear them so that you do not divide attention between different areas. For example, wear only one necklace at any given time. If you wear dangly earrings, then wear a simple chain or subdued necklace for better balance.

Create an A-Line

An A-line is a type of silhouette that works well for any body type because it focuses on creating a strong upper body at the shoulders. The result of a strong shoulder line is that you look slimmer throughout the rest of your body.

Avoid exaggerated shoulders. Try to get a look like Anne Hathaway, who naturally has wide shoulders. Buy clothing that creates a distinct and strong shoulder line without making it too obvious that you are enhancing the shoulders.

Add Color to Your Wardrobe

Do not be afraid of color. Even if you are getting older, it is not necessary to wear drab and boring clothing. Pick out colors that are suitable for your skin tone. For example, if you have a warm skin tone, then pick out bright colors like orange or red. If you have a cool skin tone, then opt for earth and water tones like blue and green.

Creating a wardrobe that focuses on your body, skin tone and age-appropriateness will allow you to look fashionable and timeless. Looking your best at every minute of the day will make you feel your best because you know that you look amazing and others will envy your style. Take a cue from Ashley Tisdale.
