I love receiving items for review in the mail, and today my A Christmas Carol, By Charles Dickens, Chuck Fischer arrived. I would like to say thank you to Anna Balasi from Hachette Book Group, for giving me the opportunity to read and review their product.
This book is, without doubt, the greatest Christmas classic of all time. I grew up with the story, having watched the movie every year with my family. When I read the book, my heart swelled at every word because the story that I had known since I was a child came to vibrant life on paper. The musical that I could recite backwards and forwards could not even compare to the vibrancy that jumped out at me from the pages. Dickens had the power to fashion the English language into whatever he wished. I couldn't read one stave without constantly returning again to the beginning and reading it again. The descriptions and dialogues were masterful. The pictures and pop-ups were a real work of art.
It never ceases to amaze me how Dickens managed to communicate so much through such a small book. The one word that comes to my mind when I think of its theme is REDEMPTION. I know no other story from literature that has a more incredible transformation of one character. At the beginning of the book and at the end, Ebenezer Scrooge is more different than a blizzard and a sunny morning. What brings it about? READ THIS BOOK, even if it's the only Dickens that you ever lay your hands on.
This is one of the few stories that is worth reading year after year. I don't believe I'll ever get tired of it. Someday I hope to know it as faithfully as I can recite the film word-for-word.
I received a copy of A Christmas Carol, in exchange for my honest opinion, and a review of my experience. I did not receive any other compensation or incentive nor was I required to write a positive review. Individual results or experiences may vary.
